Frequently Asked Questions |
|
| |
| What can I do to increase my chances of receiving Social Security Disability benefits? |
| |
| Answer: Attend your medical appointments faithfully. Make clear to your doctor your symptoms and their severity. Take your prescribed medications exactly as scheduled. If you are concerned about the effectiveness of your medication, cover that issue directly with your doctor. Do not stop taking your medication without your doctor’s approval. Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and do not use street drugs. Also refer to Question 30. |

|
| What if I do not have medical records and no health insurance and cannot afford to see a doctor? |
| |
| Answer: Social Security will send applicants for disability benefits to whatever type of doctor they need for a proper evaluation. Thus, if a person has a physical problem, they will see a general medical doctor, if they have a psychological issue they will see a psychologist or psychiatrist. Unfortunately, these doctors only see the claimant for a brief period and may not obtain an accurate picture of the claimant’s medical condition or the degree that it is disabling during that brief interaction. |
